Cylinda-line: Timeless Iconic Design Since 1967

Peter Holmblad, stepson of Arne Jacobsen, had long tried to persuade Jacobsen to create a series for Stelton, but without success. One evening in 1964, during a family dinner at Arne Jacobsen's, a moment of inspiration was captured on a napkin - just a simple drawing. This idea would forever change the history of Stelton. After seeing Peter Holmblad's sketches, Arne Jacobsen took a napkin and began to draw what would later become the teapot in the Cylinda-line series.

"During the product development phase, Arne was sometimes extremely difficult. He would not accept it when I came back from the factory and said that something technically couldn’t be done. At that time, there was no experience with this cylindrical production method. We had to invent it in order to produce Cylinda-line."

A Classic is Born

Today, more than five decades later, Cylinda-line is recognized as a timeless iconic classic. It is exhibited in design museums around the world and has won several design awards.

Our Design DNA

Inspired by Cylinda-line

Arne Jacobsen's vision for Cylinda-line was to enrich the ordinary consumer with good industrial design. With his design, he realized some of the most important principles of functionalism – total proportionality between form and function. Behind the iconic EM77 vacuum jug is the story of how Stelton strived to create a vacuum jug that harmonized with the Cylinda-line series, which Arne Jacobsen had designed a decade earlier in 1967. Erik Magnussen was assigned the task and designed the EM77 vacuum jug in 1977, which shared the same cylindrical form and material expression as the acclaimed Cylinda-line series.

"I am naturally driven by a desire to create products that are simple in both function and design. For me, there is a fine line between something being simple or banal. It is this balance that I explore for every product I create. How much can I strip away without the design losing its character or soul?”
