A cup of coffee—and a way of life

A minimalist with a sharp eye for detail. A familiar face in Copenhagen’s coffee scene. Patrik Rolf isn’t just brewing coffee—he’s brewing a lifestyle.

Right in the heart of Copenhagen, you’ll find the April Store. A coffee experience rooted in Copenhagen with the ambition to Reclaim Coffee Flavour and set the bar for quality - the traditional coffee shop package in a fine dining environment.

Outside of town you find the heart of the company, their coffee roastery. Where they work with directly sourced coffee from a handful of the best farmers in the world.

A small company with big ambitions, global reach, and deep local roots. At the center of it all is Patrik Rolf: silver medalist at the World Brewers Cup, finalist at the World Barista Championship—one of the rare few to reach the top in both.

But behind the impressive titles lies a humble spirit with a clear mission: to create something meaningful, flavorful, and beautiful. Preferably together with others.

Fact Box:
Full name: Patrik Rolf. Job/title: Age: 35. Founder & CEO of April Coffee Roasters, Roast Master. City: Copenhagen. Country: Denmark

Copenhagen in his veins, filter coffee in hand

Why Copenhagen? “It’s the city that has inspired me the most in recent years,” he says. “Here, quality, aesthetics, and innovation aren’t optional—they’re the standard. And it’s home to some of the world’s best food and drink experiences. I believe your surroundings shape you—as a person and as a brand.” For Patrik, it all started with curiosity, but quickly grew into a deep respect for coffee as a craft.

“These days, I taste a tomato with the same attention and curiosity as I would a Kenyan coffee. It changed everything.” His favorite cup? “A filter coffee at Atelier September right when they open, before the crowd. It’s about rhythm, presence, and calm.”

Honest Aesthetics

That’s where Stelton comes in. “I’ve had my EM77 vacuum jug in my kitchen for years. It’s an icon. Simple, reliable. That’s good design.” Patrik calls it “honest aesthetics”—when form and function come together to create a sense of peace.

And what about April’s packaging? “All of our packaging is designed in collaboration with our good friend and team member Max Duchardt.

Patrik’s dream product? “A Stelton x April brewer. “You know that, I actually pitched the idea to Stelton years ago. They probably thought I was moving a bit too fast, and the collaboration didn’t happen—but it sparked something. Today, we make brewers in everything from hand-blown glass to colorful plastic. So, thank you for the ‘no’—it really got things boiling.”

“The places we spend time in set the rhythm of our lives. A well-composed space can turn even a simple cup of coffee into something memorable.”

Rituals, Nostalgia, and a Touch of Bowie

Even world champions have off days. “I had a cup at a gas station in Sweden recently. Bitter. Too hot. But incredibly nostalgic. It reminded me why I started.” If April had a sound? “‘Sound and Vision’ by David Bowie. Surprising, experimental—but with a clear purpose.”

And his favorite non-coffee morning ritual? “A cold shower. Better than caffeine. And I write one sentence in my notebook. Just one. It keeps me grounded.”

For Patrik, design isn’t just about objects—it’s about space. “The places we spend time in set the rhythm of our lives. A well-composed space can turn even a simple cup of coffee into something memorable.”

A place that left a lasting impression?“Louisiana (Museum of Modern Art, just north of Copenhagen). The way the building blends into nature—it’s how things should be. Calm. Respectful. Sublime.”
