10 tips for the perfect bouquet

Most people can arrange a few flowers, but learning a few key techniques will allow you to get much more out of your flowers and control the shape of your bouquet, explains Anne Marie Raaschou-Nielsen, who has been arranging flowers for several years. Anne Marie is also the co-owner of design studio UNIT 10, designers of Stelton's new Hoop flower vases, which come in three sizes.

- If you are using a clear vase, remember not to put too much water into it

- Start by placing the largest, fullest flowers and branches in the vase

- Combine flowers you have bought with branches (e.g. birch, cherry) and flowers or grasses you have gathered yourself. This makes the bouquet look more natural and interesting.

- Experiment with colours, e.g. pink and orange

- Combine different flower shapes – e.g. round-headed and bell-shaped flowers

- The bouquet doesn’t need to look too ‘neat’ – it’s great if it looks a little more casually put together

- Don’t overdo the bouquet (not too many flowers or branches)

- Don’t forget to cut the stems before you place the bouquet in the vase

- Remember to change the water daily to prolong the bouquet’s life

- Arrange several vases together for that luxurious look
